Knowing the signs
before disaster strikes
Nobody wants to come home to fallen ceilings due to roof leaks. By the time a ceiling collapses like in this image, the repair costs have potentially doubled, tripled or more. In this case, the sum of damages included the roof, ceiling, flooring and a sound system. Fortunately this lucky business owner didn’t come in to find worse. Water in appliances or light fixtures can actually cause electrical fires. Prolonged water penetration causes mold and bacterial growth. There are even cases of people being injured when the water soaked drywall collapses on to of them. It’s easy to see how a simple leak can become a major disaster.
Below are a few images that can indicate water intrusion before things get completely out of hand.
Most people know what this means. But water staining the ceiling can be from more than a roof leak. Improperly insulated air conditioning ducts, freon lines or drain pipes can sweat and cause water staining as well.
Sometimes things outside can indicate a problem before they enter the interior of the home. Here are some images showing water staining that come from roof leakage. It is evident that this is not just rain water runoff as there is no staining on the fascia or only on the back edge. Notice also in the one image how water is rotting out the porch roof support member.
